The third site is the Kofuku-ji temple, on the west side of the Nara park, south west to the Todai-ji.
The Kofuku-ji temple used to be the family temple of the powerful Fujiwara clan during Nara and Heian periods. It was established in Nara in year 710. At the height of Fujiwara power, the complex consisted of over 150 buildings. Today only few buildings of great historic value remain.
This is the Five Storied Pagoda, which is one of Japan's tallest. It also hosts relics of an old Buddha.
